Classroom Visits

SHS can provide classroom visits on a variety of shelter and pet related topics, including dog bite prevention presentations that are geared towards teaching young students safety with animals.

Camp Barks N Rec

Each summer the Spokane Humane Society provides children 7 – 9 the chance to attend Camp Barks N’ Rec. Campers learn responsibility and compassion for animals with plenty of play and cuddle time with our dogs, cats, and pocket pets!

Visit and Tour the Shelter

Visitors five years and older are invited to an educational presentation and tour of our facility.  Tour groups must consist of five or more people.

Tours of the SHS shelter include a cat or dog themed enrichment activity, visiting the cat rooms, dog kennel, and small animal room. Depending on the surgery schedule, a tour may include viewing surgery in progress at our Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic.

Tours are given between 10 am-4 pm, Monday through Friday.  Weekend tours are available on a limited basis and must be booked well in advance.  Tour length is between 45 min – 1 hour, depending on the age of the group.

Visitors are encouraged to bring dog and cat treats, and small amounts of leafy lettuce (no iceberg lettuce) for rabbits and other small pets.

Contact Amanda Bennett at for a shelter tour.

Pawsitive Works Program

Pawsitive Works

The Spokane Humane Society has teamed up with Eagle Peak School to implement the Pawsitive Works program.  Twice a year a handful of SHS dogs participate in this 5 week program.   This program is designed to help at-risk youth learn lifelong values of empathy, patience, self-concept, mindfulness, and communication while also improving the dog’s adoptability.
